Pyrrole derivatives of the following general formula <FORM:0600807/IV(b)/1> in which R is hydrogen or alkyl, Ar is phenyl or naphthyl, and X is dialkylaminoalkyl, are prepared by heating the corresponding dialkyl esters with a dialkylamino alcohol in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate. In the examples, diethyl-2.5-diphenylpyrrole-3.4-dicarboxylate (prepared by condensing methylamine hydrochloride with diethyl dibenzoylsuccinate) is heated with b -diethylaminoethanol or -propanol in which sodium has been dissolved to give di-(b -diethylamino-ethyl or -propyl) - 1 - methyl - 2.5 - diphenylpyrrole - 3.4 - dicarboxylate. Salts of the bases with chlorplatinic, hydrochloric and other strong acids are referred to.
